项目摘要

前年度に得た結論の再検討と適宜の修正を行うと共に、研究対象をいわゆる「編戸」に絞り、現地の踏査および戸籍断簡接続の確認を行った上で次の結論を得た。(1)御野国戸籍においては、課口数の均等を実現するため、戸口単位での移動を頻繁に行っていた。移動させられた戸口は他の戸口と血縁関係をもたない、破片的な寄口となることが多かった。それに対し、西海道戸籍においては、課口数の極端な過多が生じることのないよう配慮されてはいるものの、御野国戸籍のように、均等な課口数を実現することまでは指向されていない。その代わり、課口数の調整にあたっては、血縁関係をもつ一定規模の集団単位で移動を行うことが多い。移動させられた戸口は、戸主の親族でないため、みな寄口と呼ばれるが、御野国のように破片的であることは少なく、むしろ寄戸というべき状態であることが多い。大宝令の施行を境として、寄口から寄戸へという変化が起こっていると考えられる。(2)下総国戸籍においては、庶民に至るまで徹底した嫡系主義が取られ、戸口は戸主を中心とした親族集団として把握されるようになった。そこには一定の擬制が生じたことが予想されるが、人民全てを出生の段階から全て登録し、固定的に維持・把握しようとする政府側の強い意図が見て取れる。しかしこの方式は、父には必ず子が生まれて成長し、世代の再生産が円滑に行われるという理想を前提としていたため、天平年間の大量の疫死で決定的に崩壊する。租税の著しい減少を恐れた政府は、生存者をかき集めるかたちで戸の再編成を行ったが、内的な結合動機をもたないこのような戸に自律的な再生産は不可能であった。また賦課負担の責任者としての戸主の機能は著しく損なわれ、戸主は単なる戸の筆頭に過ぎなくなってしまう。
