申請者は、プラトン『ュクラテュロス』篇について新しい発想で高水準の研究を行うことを目的としている。古代哲学の研究であることは勿論だが、伝統としての語源学それ自体の意義を明らかにし、プラトンがこれをいかに批判的に吸収したかを解明する。また、『クラテュロス』篇の後代への影響を、哲学だけではなく、広く文化史的におさえる。古代文学・修辞学・文法学との関連、近現代の言語哲学・言語学との関連を重視したプラトン研究、ひいてはより広く、古代哲学研究を志す。それにより、古代哲学研究が真の意味で開かれたものとなることに貢献したい。以上の研究を遂行するための基礎訓練を受けるために、ケンブリッジ大学へ一年間留学した。プラトン研究だけではなく、現在ストア哲学研究の第一人者であるDavid Sedley教授にご指導を仰ぐことができたことにより、『クラテュロス』篇の後代への影響(とりわけ、語源論の伝統を肯定的に吸収し、さらに発展させたストア派への影響)を多角的にとらえることができた。また、日本西洋古典学会からの依頼を受けて執筆した、R.M.van den Berg,Proclus'Commentary on the Cratylus in Contextについての書評では、『クラテュロス』篇の後代への影響を広く文化史的におさえるという目的を遂行することができ、さらに、語源論に哲学的意味を見出すための足掛かりとなるいくらかの論点を見出すことができた。このことは、今後の『クラテュロス』篇研究において非常に意義のあるものとなるに違いない。
