项目摘要

ヘンリー・ジェイムズの作品における「語り手」と「視点」の問題を通して、アメリカ文学における世紀転換期リアリズム小説の世界認識のあり方を再考するという研究計画に照らし、二つの研究を行った。第一に、研究の中心となるジェイムズの後期長篇のうち、とりわけ『鳩の翼』(1902)と『大使たち』(1903)の二作に関する分析の作業を行った。まず、それぞれのテクストの精読を行い、登場人物たちの人間関係、物語の展開、語りの特徴、難解な箇所の解釈など、研究の上での基盤となる読解作業を丁寧に進めた。とりわけ『鳩の翼』の小説上のクロノロジーを詳細な表にまとめ、時間軸の移動についての理解を深めた。その上で、膨大な先行研究を調査・整理し、その蓄積に付け加えられるべき新しい論点の模索を行った。これらの研究をもとに、今後論文を数本執筆して発表し、博士論文のための重要な素材とする予定である。第二に、前年度の初期ジェイムズの成長過程研究の成果をまとめて発表した。駆け出しの作家であった若きジェイムズにとって、1869-1870年と1872-1874年の二度にわたるヨーロッパ旅行経験が様々な意味で大きな転機となったのであり、「国際状況」と「視点」というしばしば別箇に論じられるジェイムズの二大モチーフは、ヨーロッパ旅行の経験のテクスト化を通じてこの時期に同時的に成立した。この論点について、2011年6月に開催されたアメリカ学会の第45回年次大会において口頭発表を行い、また同年8月には査読付きの学術誌『言語態』第11号に発表した。十分には位置づけられてこなかったジェイムズの初期作品の意義について検討したこれらの研究成果は、小説における視点の問題という、文学の「形式」に関する議論が、国際状況という「主題」に関する議論と不可分のものであることを具体的に確認したという点でも、非常に重要であるといえる。
