项目摘要

今年度の研究活動は、アメリカ文学を通史と、いくつかのテーマ(キーワード)の両方から論じることを目的とした著書『キーワードで読むアメリカ文学』の作成プロジェクトへの参加に従事したことに集約される。プロジェクトにおける私の担当は、与えられたキーワードである「妊娠、中絶、近親相姦」に関する論稿を完成させること、及び、アメリカ文学の主に小説を中心とする歴史的な流れを分担してまとめることであった。キーワードに関しては、アメリカ文学小説で扱われている「妊娠、中絶、近親相姦」のうち、特に物語の筋にそれが大きく関与しているものとして、自然主義作家ドライサーから、現代の黒人女性作家モリスンまで、時代、分野を異にする作家達の代表的作品をそれぞれ取り上げ、時代の変遷と共に、未婚のヒロインがどのようなバラエティをもって描かれていくのか、その過程を追った。また、アメリカ小説の文学通史では、植民地時代から独立戦争までの2世紀間を担当し、この間に活躍し、アメリカの思潮、文学の流れに大きく影響を与えた著名な作家、著述家達の生涯およびその作品をまとめ、紹介している。植民地時代のアメリカには、後世に影響を与えるような小説家はまだ存在していなかったため、取り上げた人物は、当時まだ植民地にすぎなかったアメリカにおいて、政治、宗教、教育、学術の部門で活躍し、その人生、もしくは主張した思想が後のアメリカ小説の原点になった、ジョン・スミス、コットン・マザー、ベンジャミン・フランクリンなどである。このプロジェクトは、このように植民地時代から現代まで、幅広い範囲を包括していることもあり、現在も進行中であるが、2004年上半期に英宝社より出版される予定である。
