本研究では、女性の生涯にわたる就業、結婚、出産の選択を動学的最適化として捉えつつ、理論モデルと推定データを直接結び付ける構造推定アプローチを用いて実証分析を行った。構造推定では、構築した理論モデルを用いて、あらゆる状況を想定しながら各期の個人の効用最大化問題を解いていき、最終的に期待効用関数を導出する。そうして得られた期待効用関数を用いて尤度関数を導出し、それを最大にするパラメターを求める。構造推定では効用関数のパラメターを直接推定できることから、本研究の分析は主観的厚生に関する研究とも深く関連する。当該研究者は、結婚・出産前後の女性の主観的厚生の変化も分析しており、夫の家事・育児参加が女性の主観的厚生を高める上で重要であることを確認している。主観的厚生を高めることは結婚、出産のインセンティブを高めることにつながるため、未婚化・晩婚化・少子化・晩産化といった問題の解決に寄与することが期待される。構造推定による分析では、就業選択による経験の蓄積が将来稼得可能な収入に与える効果、および出産の選択が将来の子どもの存在につながる効果を明示的に考慮しつつ推定した結果、学歴や就業経験年数といった人的資本の蓄積度合いは、収入のみならず、就業形態から得られる効用に対しても直接的に強く影響しており、そのことも考慮しながら、女性の就業、結婚、出産を同時に選択した場合に得られる効用を高める政策を講じる必要がある。また、人的資本の蓄積度合いによって、労働からの不効用の大きさが異なることも明らかになった。人的資本蓄積の大きい女性は、働くことに対して労働の不効用を比較的得ておらず、非正規雇用よりも正規雇用で働くほうが労働の不効用を得ていないことがわかった。このことから、これら女性の就業を促進することが、少子化による労働力不足を補ううえで効果的である。
