本研究では、エコデミクス(ecodemics)を主要概念として分析し、人間社会と鳥類のかかわりに焦点を当て、グローバル・リスクとしての人と鳥類の健康問題および双方の持続可能性の課題を明らかにすることを目的とする。エコデミクスには、人間と鳥類のいずれにとっても生命を脅かす重大な危険が潜在する。したがって、エコデミクスに関連するリスクを理解し、学際的なアプローチからこの研究課題に取り組むことには、エコデミクスに関するリスクを最小化するための対策を講じるに際し、社会、政治、経済、文化といった諸側面においてどのような障壁があるのかを把握する上で有用である。本研究では、日本と東アジアの近隣諸国におけるエコデミクスのリスクについての社会意識や人と鳥類の関係での現状を把握する。さらに、欧州連合(EU)での状況を研究対象に含め、日本との対比を行う。4月から11月にかけて、代表者メルヴィオは、エコデミクスに関連する研究資料を、日本と東アジアおよびEU諸国について学際的・体系的に収集し分析を続け基礎研究を深めた。6月には京都学園大学教授・北尾邦伸博士の協力を得て、トゥルク商科大学未来研究ユニットの研究員(Jyrki Luukkanen博士、Juha Kaskinen博士およびBurkhard Affermann博士)を招聘し、国際セミナーを京都大学で実施した(「縮小社会研究会」の協賛による)。各自の研究発表(英語)をもとにメルヴィオは研究成果として原稿の編集を行い、研究成果の発表のために英国の出版社との交渉を開始した。11月初めには本研究をさらに発展させるために基盤研究カテゴリーへの研究費を申請した。1月から3月にかけては、メルヴィオは、本プロジェクトの総括と国内でのフィールド調査(九州方面)を行った。
