项目摘要

本研究では、近代日本の開港場における急性感染症の流行状況およびその対策が、国際的契機を背景に、どのように展開したかを検討した。本年度は、地域としては、横浜をおもな対象として、横浜開港資料館、横浜市立中央図書館などで資料収集を行なった。また、国内および海外における日本関係外交文書の収集・検討も実施した。具体的には、「外務省記録」(外務省外交史料館所蔵)、海外ではRecords created and inherited by the Foreign Office (FO, The National Archives, UK)をそれぞれ調査した。後者については、従来の研究で言及されてきたFO46やFO262以外にも、各開港場での英国領事館の記録がまとまって保存さていることが判明した。膨大な分量であるため、今後も継続して調査を行う必要がある。成果の一部は、収集した資料を元に、The 6th International Congress of Asian Scholars (ICAS6) 2009, Korea (2009年8月)において、"Medical Practice in Treaty Ports and Army as Medical Channel in Modern Japan"を口頭発表した。同時に、疫学研究、人類生態学などの自然科学分野、韓国および東南アジア医学史などの隣接分野の研究者からコメントを得た。今後は、国内各開港場での資料集を積極的に展開するとともに、The National Archivesでの領事館関係文書の収集をさらに進めることが課題である。以上の活動から、各開港場がおかれた地理的・経済的・政治的な状況の違いを踏まえて、急性感染症の発生および抑制がどのような形で推移したのかを検討する。また、隣接諸分野の専門家には、引き続きコメントを求める必要がある。

This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of acute infectious diseases in modern Japan and international opportunities. This year, the data collection of Yokohama Port and Yokohama City Central Library was launched.
