Study on Residential Conditions in the Relocation Sites built after the Indian Ocean Tsunami within the vicinity of Banda Aceh Municipality

This research aims to clarify actual condition of the residents' livelihood rehabilitation in two resettlements in and around Banda Aceh Municipality (BNA) constructed after Indian Ocean Tsunami 2004.Our research was first done by questionnaire survey to all the permanent houses followed by the detailed interview survey to a particular community unit. The paper focuses on one resettlement in BNA and another in its outskirts. Many residents in the former were former house/land owners. Contrary to that, those in suburban one were mostly former tenants who rented houses in BNA. Examination on the livelihood rehabilitation chiefly focuses on occupation, development of community and intention to reside permanently in the resettlement. The paper concludes that locations of workplace as well as stability of the occupation (informal/formal) would have significant effect on the decision whether or not residents continue to live in the permanent houses provided in the suburban resettlement.
