项目摘要

This research indicates that Shan, Theravada Buddhists in Southeast Asia, carry on the tradition of Buddhist texts (manuscripts) as the practice of both orality and literacy. By focusing the activities of lay intellectuals, it shows that certain number of immigrants from the Shan State of Myanmar to Thailand take the role of readers (reciter) of the texts in Buddhist rituals; they instruct Thai-born Shan how to recite the text as master or teacher; so it would not be possible to keep up the tradition of Buddhist texts without the immigrant intellectuals in Thailand.

这项研究表明，东南亚的小乘佛教僧人继承了佛经(手稿)的传统，既练习口语，又练习识字。通过关注非信徒知识分子的活动，它表明，从缅甸掸邦到泰国的一定数量的移民在佛教仪式中扮演着经文的朗读者(朗诵者)的角色；他们指导泰国出生的掸邦如何作为大师或教师背诵经文；因此，如果没有泰国的移民知识分子，就不可能保持佛教经文的传统。
