Economic Ripple Effects of Bio-energy Investments in East Asia: Application of the Computable General Equilibrium Model

Bio-ethanol is expected to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, to increase domestic energy supply and to vitalize rural economies, but there is a matter of competition with food in the market. This study aims to evaluate economic and environmental impacts of bio-ethanol production in east Asia by using input-output (I/O) model and dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. The simulation results demonstrated that investment for bio-ethanol production plants as well as annual production induced production which is around double of input costs. Furthermore, the introduction of the second generation bio-ethanol production using advanced technology, which is now being developed under experimental projects, can increase domestic income without competing with food demand.
