Improvement of corrosion resistance and mechanical properties in magnesium alloy by ceramic coating

Extruded plate of AZ80 magnesium alloy was coated with ceramics by sol-gel processing, and we investigated the effects of heat treatment conditions, under which the ceramic thin films were formed, on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the base plate. Ceramic thin films(CeO2 and MgO) could be successfully formed from precursor solution by sol-gel processing under heat treatment conditions, under which the base plate was age-hardened. The corrosion resistance of specimens was found to be improved by the ceramic coatings. The simultaneous acquisition of age hardening and corrosion resistance in magnesium alloy coated with ceramics by sol-gel processing was possible.
