平成22年度は、雲岡石窟を中心とする中国山西省の仏教遺跡の現地調査を行い、これらの遺跡の仏教造像、とりわけ弥勒造像の図像が持つ地域的な特徴を明らかにすることを主目的として研究を遂行した。夏季八月には雲岡石窟研究所の協力をいただき、雲岡初期・中期窟の現地調査を行った。まず昭和初期の写真および映像資料との比較対照のもと、石窟の補修箇所や造像の欠損部分の確認などの作業を行い、ここ数十年での石窟寺院の相貌の変化をふまえた上で、石窟造営過程と図像プログラムについての復元的研究を行った。特に、造営年代の違いや造営に携わった工人グループの違いといった造営事情が反映されやすいと思われる、石窟寺院を荘厳する装飾文様や、窟内造像の着衣形式などの細部に注目し、形状の確認と線図の作製を行い、その変遷を系統立てて把握することを目指した。また石窟全体の構造を現場で詳細に観察することで、追刻箇所の有無、壁面造像の造営順序の前後関係について考察を行った。加えて、中期双窟に表現された説話図像についても、ガンダーラ造像の浮彫図像との比較対照に基づき、従来の主題解釈の再検討を行い、従来ガンダーラにしか存在しないとされていた説話図像が、雲岡石窟に伝播していたことを指摘するという成果を挙げた。このほかに、山西省博物院、博物館を見学し、石窟や仏教寺院址から請来された造像を確認した。加えて応県木塔、五台山の古刹、天龍山石窟などの現地調査を行い、資料の収集に努めた。
