Harriet Beecher Stowe and Female Writers in Victorian Britain

Harriet Beecher Stowe's _Uncle Tom's Cabin_ (1851-52) encouraged British writers of social problem novels which flourished in 1840s and 50s. Many of them were written by female authors, and the key to the solutions they showed was often morally superior women's influence towards men, just as in _Uncle Tom's Cabin_. On the other hand, Stowe was influenced by British social problem novels in her decision to write a novel in order to speak out against slavery. Thus, there was certainly an interaction between the British women writers and Harriet Beecher Stowe.
