The Evangelical moral reform movement from the end of the 18th century to the early 19th century emphasized domestic values and women's role in the domestic sphere. While this limited the women's sphere to inside the home, it gave an opportunity to participate in social activities to some women who took seriously their role to disseminate the domestic values in the society. What caused these contrasting results was the contradiction involved in the Evangelical discourse on women's role, and the literary texts of the early to mid-Victorian period written by women often illustrates how the contradiction affected them.
