Parliament, Constituency and Local Interests in 16th - 19th century Britain

A historical model has been widely known that the British parliament consisting of landed gentlemen who represented local(particularly county) communities gradually achieved the sovereign power against the crown in early modern and modern ages. That modern British history is a story of the developing and triumphing parliament is a historical orthodoxy in not only Britain, a pioneer nation establishing parliamentary government, but also in lots of nations now accepting the parliamentary system. The model, however, has been recently challenged by theoretical and empirical studies of British early modern and modern history. This research project critically reexamines the model in great details. It is expected to contribute to a historical debate on the role of the parliament, through publishing an academic book on British parliamentaryhistory.
