Discourse analysis of "tabunka-kyousei" on education of linguistic and cultural minority students

有人说，多元文化教育将使我们能够改变日本公共教育的框架，以便以更相关的方式回应不同语言和文化的学生。然而，近年来，多文化共存这个词的使用频率超过了多元文化教育。本研究旨在通过对涉及到日本学校语言文化教育的论文和书籍的语篇和文本分析来检验“Tabunka-kyousei”的概念。语篇和内容分析表明，它的使用没有明确的定义和解释。在不改变现行教育框架的前提下，强调帮助少数民族学生适应日本学校的重要性。在这一点上，它与多元文化教育有很大不同，多元文化教育致力于改变学校体系的结构。

It has been said that multicultural education will enable us to change the framework of Japanese public education in order to respond in more relevant ways to linguistically and culturally diverse students. However, more recently, the word of"tabunka-kyousei"(multicultural coexistence)has been used more frequently than multicultural education.This research aimed to examine the concept of "tabunka-kyousei" through discourse and text analysis of papers and books referring to "tabunka-kyousei" regarding education of linguistic and cultural minority students in Japanese schools.Discourse and content analysis indicates us that its word has been used without clear definition or explanation. It also finds out that "tabunka-kyousei" emphasizes the importance to help the minority students adapt to the Japanese schools without changing the framework of current education. At this point, it differs very much from multicultural education which works toward changing structures of school systems.
