Study on the fine structure of convective cells in developed cumulonimbus clouds using 10-sec rainfall amount

The fine structure of convective cells in developed cumulonimbus clouds was investigated by measuring the amount of rainfall at 10-s intervals with two different types of precipitation sensors. The time series for 10-s rain intensity obtained from both precipitation sensors exhibited a distinct temporal cycle with a period of 1-2 min, and these temporal cycles were synchronized with each other. These features imply that each convective cell consists of distinct precipitation cores distributed at rather regular intervals of approximately 1 km. Despite this distinct periodic feature, associated variations in surface meteorological parameters were not clear.
