项目摘要

本研究は、カロリング期フランク王国において医師medicusが果たした役割と社会的地位を明らかにすることを目的としている。カロリング期フランク王国の医療の担い手について、史料集『ゲルマン史料集成』Monumenta Cermaniae Historica(以下MGH)のオンライン版を用いて、カロリング期フランク王国及びランゴバルド王国で書かれた史料の中でmedicusが登場するものについて調査を行った。年代記、国王証書、書簡等の史料から抽出したmedicusの用例は246例であった。その内訳は、実在していたあるいは実在したと推測されるある特定の医師についての記述が33、神やキリスト、大天使ラファエルまたは聖人を医師にたとえている用例が36、魂の医師の役目を聖職者に説いているものが13、法に定められた外傷の治療者あるいは傷害事件の証人としての医師を指す用例が39、その他治療者としての医師が125例であった。多くの場合、医師は何らかの治療行為あるいは病や薬に関するコンテクストの中で登場する。医療に関する知識を有する者、治療する者もしくは治療しようとする者としてmedicusの語が用いられている他、ロターリ王法典ではmedicusは外傷事件の証人でもある。いくつかの国王証書では、病や治療とは関係のない文脈の中で聖職者がmedicusと称されており、治療を行わない際にも医師として人々に認識されていたことを示している。これらの証書はいずれも土地の贈与や特権下賜に関するもので、当時の医師が得た財産や特権を伝えている。聖職者に魂の医師たるよう諭す説教におけるmedicusの用例も見られる。神への不信仰や悪徳などによって穢れた信徒たちの魂を導く聖職者の役割が、魂を治癒する医師の務めとして理解されていた。神、キリスト、大天使ラファエル、そして聖人たちも史料中でmedicusと呼ばれたが、これは治癒の奇跡や告解の際の魂の医師を指す隠喩的な表現である。中世初期においてmedicusは「治療者」あるいは「医学的知識を有する者」、そして聖職者に限っては「魂の導き手」であった。
