本研究の目的は、病因、病態、病理に関する唯一の専書として中国医学史上、特異な位置を占める『諸病源候論』(610年成立、巣元方撰)について、その疾病分類の特徴を分析することにあった。また疾病を67門、1739種に分類する本書の疾病記述は、漢代以降に成立した医学文献の内容を多く継承しており、かつその疾病定義が日本、中国の別を問わず後世の医学書にしばしば引用されてきたことを鑑み、本書の他の医学書への影響関係をも分析対象とし、中国医学における疾病観の変遷を探る基礎的な作業とした。具体的な成果としては、両年度を通じ最善本(宋版)を用いた経文のデータベース入力作業を進め、さらに宋改以前の旧態を存すると考えられる『医心方』との校合作業を行った。最終年度に当たる平成13年度はこの成果をもとに、本書と先行する医学経典(『素問』『霊枢』『傷寒論』『金匱要略』)、および本書の疾病分類を採用した日本、中国の医学全書(『医心方』『太平聖恵方』『聖済総録』)との引用関係、相互関係を明らかにするべく、対照表をも含めた総合データベース作成に着手した(平成14年度中完成予定)。作業量が膨大となったため、総合データベースはまだ完成をみていないが、作業過程において明らかになった事項を以下に2点挙げたい。1.計画段階で予想したとおり、『諸病源候論』の記述は先行する医学書の記述を大量に含むが、必ずしも原文とおりの引用ではなく、病因の説明などを補い、原本には見られなかった因果関係を明確にする場合が多く見られる。2.『諸病源候論』の引用書目は多種にわたるが、同一種の疾病の記述に関して、諸書の記述をあえて一貫性のあるものにまとめることはせず、内容的に矛盾、相違する部分に関しては別項目をたて、複数の書の記述を併存させるように編集している。
