本年度は2本の学会報告を行った。どちらの報告においても、石母田正氏が提唱した王民=良人共同体モデルを克服し、新たな共同体モデルを提示することを試みた。日本史研究会古代史部会における口頭報告では、蝦夷は律令制における通常の課役を負担せず、特殊な課税によって排除・差別されていたという通説を再検討した。すなわち、従来例外として重視されていなかった蝦夷の調庸負担を示す史料を精読することにより、蝦夷は服属後一般公民と同様の戸籍に登録され調庸を負担した可能性が高いことを指摘した。The 1st EAJS Conference in Japanにおける口頭報告では、服属した蝦夷と帰化人の存在形態を比較し、史料にみえる「蝦夷」の表記は身分概念ではなく出自概念であり、服属・帰化と併存しうる概念であることを指摘した。従来、「蝦夷」と記される「蝦夷」は、いまだ帰化しておらず特殊な身分に固定化された存在であるとみなされてきたが、帰化とは行政的な手続きであり、風俗・言語・習慣の変更を強制するものではないことを明らかにした。そのため、蝦夷は蝦夷としての特徴を失わないまま共同体内に包摂されていた可能性が高く、石母田説のような排除モデルではとらえられないことを指摘した。
