平成25年(2013年)9月9日～27日に国外調査を行い、メリーリャ(スペイン)とラバト(モロッコ)を訪問した。メリーリャはモロッコ北東部沿岸に位置するスペイン領の「飛び地」で、その地政学的特徴により、アフリカ大陸からヨーロッパ大陸へ渡るための玄関口として、特にヨーロッパへの移住や移動を試みるアフリカ諸国出身者にとってその認識が拡大しつつある。メリーリャには、モロッコ人やスペイン人、アラブ、ベルベル、ムスリム、キリスト教徒、ユダヤ教徒などエスニシティや帰属宗教を異にする人々が居住する。またメリーリャは、スペイン領モロッコ時代に植民地政府の拠点の一つとなった地であり、リーフ戦争時には周辺農村部を含め激しい戦闘が繰り広げられた地域でもある。メリーリャにおける人々の混住状況について、史料から本格的な定量分析が可能となるのは、19世紀半ば以降の史料である。今回の調査では、とりわけスペイン領モロッコ時代(1912-56年)直前のメリーリャの住民の混住状況を把握することのできる史料や、本研究課題であるリーフ戦争期に関連する史資料の収集を目的に、メリーリャの総合文書館や軍事文書館、図書館に通い作業に従事した。ラバトも訪問し、研究書等の購入に従事した。2013年11月には、第4回イスラーム地域研究国際会議のためパキスタンのラホールを訪れた。ラホール経営大学(LUMS)で開催されたこの国際会議では、11月3日、ポスターセッションによる口頭発表「The Reconsideration of the Rif War (1921-1926) in light of the writings of 'Abd al-Karĩm al-Khaţţãbĩ」を行った。2013年12月7日には、スペイン史学会第155回定例研究会(慶應塾大学三田キャンパス)において「メリーリャにおける異教徒の混住―19世紀末～20世紀初頭の住民基本台帳を手がかりに―」を行い、同年9月のメリーリャでの調査を通じて収集した史料を一部加えて報告した。また2013年8月には、北アフリカ・マグリブ地域研究者による「マフザン研究会」を発足した。「マフザン」と表現されるマグリブ地域の王朝(国家)権力の性質について、おもにモロッコ、アルジェリアを中心に中世～現代にかけて幅広く議論することを目的として、何度か研究会を開催し個別発表を行った。
