研究代表者は、ホモ・サピエンスがアジアやヨーロッパに拡散する際の通過点となったと考えられる南イランにおいて人類拡散の時期にあたる中期旧石器時代以降の石器インダストリーを解明し、他の地域と比較することで、石器製作技術の系譜を明らかにするとともに、「南ルート」やホモ・サピエンスの拡散モデルを考古学的に検証することを研究の目的としていた。しかし調査の過程において研究者間で石器研究は年代ごとに分担することになり、申請者は人類拡散期以後の原新石器から新石器時代にかけての石器群を分析することで、アラビア半島から持ち込まれた石器製作技術の伝統があるかどうか検討し、また同地域内で独自に発展した技術、その他石器製作に関連する行動の復元を試みることになった。本年度は、昨年度までに得られた石器群の分析と、資料研究を中心に行った。研究代表者が担当する石器群はアルセンジャンA5-3洞窟の開口部のごく一部に当たる4m×4mの範囲から出土したものであるため、総数は約3万点に上るものの、そのほとんどは石器製作過程で生じた砕片である。従って同遺跡に居住した住人が有していたであろう正確な道具組成は明らかにすることができなかったが、同地域には中期旧石器時代から続く石器伝統が存在し、石器制作過程を通時的にみると石材選択が各時代の技術に合わせて変化していくこと、原新石器時代までは中期旧石器時代的な道具類が依然として使用、または転用されていたことが確かめられた。大型の石器製作も可能な良質の石材産地であるアルセンジャン地域においてアラビア半島に見られるような大型の道具類が見られず、半島の影響を直接受けているとは断定しえない。同地域には多様かつ豊富な石材を背景とした独自の技術発展があるものと考えられ、今後同地域の石器製作技術の全容を解明する上で意義のある示唆ができたと考える。
