本研究は, 乳幼児の発話の生成と知覚の発達を, 調音運動の観点から解明することを目的とするものである. 今まで, 発話音に着目した研究が数多く報告されてたが, 舌や顎の運動(調音運動)を実測した研究は存在しない. 私は, 音響だけではなく, 調音運動の発達を明らかにすることで, 発話の仕組みや発話の起源に迫ることができると考えた. こうした知見は, 発話生成・知覚のリハビリテーションや教育への応用につながると考えられる. 具体的には, (1)音響的特徴量から母音生成時の調音状態を逆推定することと, (2)調音器官の関係性に基づいた音韻列の解析を行った。先ず, (1)に関しての詳細を説明する. 先行研究に基づいて調音モデルから音声を生成すること出来る. 私は, モデルによって生成される音声と, 実測された乳幼児の音声の誤差を小さくすることで, モデルのパラメタを推定し, 調音運動の発達変化を解明することを考えた. その結果, 母音生成の発達が3つの段階に分かれることを明らかにした. 更に各段階を詳細に分析した結果, 第一段階では, 口唇の開きと舌体の協調によって母語に依存しない母音が生成されているが, 続く2つの段階では, より多数の運動パタンが加わることで, 母語を反映した調音運動を行っていることが明らかになった. また, 第二段階から第三段階への遷移には, 喉頭の下降が関わっている可能性が示唆され, 器質-機能発達と発話の起源についての知見が得られた. 次に(2)に関しての詳細を説明する. 単語の多様性は異なる子音の組み合わせによって生じる. 子音の組み合わせに基底する調音運動に関して, 初期は同じ子音を反復するが, 発達に伴って異なる子音を組み合わせるように発達することが報告されている. 本研究は, この多様化の過程を, 調音器官の関係性から詳細に調べた. その結果, 身体性が発達の拘束条件となっていることを解明した.
