本研究の目的は、19世紀前半にイギリス政府がなぜ技術教育政策を開始したかを明らかにすることである。具体的には、1837年に、イングランドにおける初めての政府立技術教育機関であるデザイン学校が設立された背景を検討する。二年にわたった本研究の最終年度にあたる本年度は、初頭にまず、イギリスで史料調査を行った。昨年度より、ロンドンとコヴェントリにおいて、当地の19世紀前半における絹業、デザイン学校に関連する史料調査を行っており、本年度初頭の調査時は、これらの調査を引き続き行った。これに加えて、エセックスで絹業を営んでいたコートールド(Courtauld)に関連する史料の調査、LSE Libraryに所蔵されているWebb Collectionに含まれる繊維産業関連の史料調査を行った。帰国後は、これらの史料の整理を行いながら、昨年度から引き続いて行っている研究の成果を論文「19世紀前半イギリスにおける技術教育政策―「デザインの技術」振興の発想をめぐって―」(政治経済学・経済史学会『歴史と経済』2014年、所収号未定)としてまとめた。論文執筆の過程で、新たな研究視角を見出したため、本年度の後半は、当初計画していた研究内容を修正した。すなわち、これまでは、絹業を中心とした製造業自体がいかなる問題を孕んでいたかという視点から、デザイン学校の設立の背景を論じることに焦点を当てていたのであるが、デザイン学校は、美の判定能力を製造業従事者に身に付けさせるのが一義的な狙いであった点を重視するようになった。これにより、本年度の後半は、美学史・思想史上、美の判定能力の教育の捉え方がどのように変遷したことが、デザイン学校が設立される背景として働いたのかの研究に向かった。この研究成果については、来年度、研究報告会で発表する予定である。
