We isolated for antibacterial substance with an inhibitory activity against Vibrio vulnificus. V. vulnificus L-9 showed antibacterial activity against 45 V. vulnificus strains among 51 stock cultures maintained by our laboratory. The antibacterial substance produced by V. vulnificus L-9 inhibited several strains of Vibrio spices, gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus,Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus reuteri and several strains of Lactococcus spices. The antibacterial substance was sensitive to Protease K, was stable in the pH 3-6, and wasin the high salt concentration (24%). The apparent molecular mass of antibacterial substance was estimated to be lower than 2,000 Da, by the ultrafiltration. These results indicated that the antibacterial substance produced by V. vulnificus L-9 was a novel bacteriocin with broad spectrum antibacterial activity.
