A Sociological Study of Women's employment and Gender Role Attitude in Japan

This study examines changes in attitudes to gender roles in contemporary Japan by mainly using panel survey data in 2011-13 JLPS (Japanese Life Course Panel Survey). The major conclusions of this study are as follows:1) Against our initial expectation, gender role attitudes are rather unstable in Japan and major change come from marriage experience for both men and women. 2) Especially among women, there is a tendency that gender role attitudes can change according to their employment conditions after marriage rather than determine their employment choices. 3) For both men and women, there is a strong relation between regarding happy family life as important and accepting traditional gender role in division of labor within families(male breadwinner, and female homemaker).
