「高齢者における水中運動の中心動脈伸展性に対する効果」、平成21年度～23年度科学研究費補助金、代表者：鰺坂隆一において、高齢者における中心動脈伸展性の改善には核心温が0.7度C以上上昇することが必要である可能性が示唆されたことから、全身体温が0.7度C以上上昇しうる足湯の条件を決定するための検討を行った。足湯における体温を測定している報告はごく少数であったが、43度Cで30分間の両下腿までの足湯によって鼓膜温が１度C程度上昇したとする報告があった（Eur J Appl Physiol,112:1261-1268,2012）。このため、この条件で予備実験を行ったところ、若年者においては、鼓膜温が１度C程度上昇することが確認できた。そこで、若年者においてはこの足湯の条件で測定を開始することとした。ただし、43度Cで30分間の両下腿までの足湯は、足の熱感が強くかつ下腿皮膚の発赤が高度であったので、高齢者においては、より安全かつ快適な条件を設定する必要があると考えられた。上記予備実験においては、新規に購入した鼓膜温計が正確に体温を評価しうるかの検討も行った。その結果、前述の文献で示された足湯直後の37度C～38度Cの測定結果とほぼ一致した。今後、直腸温との同時評価を行って本鼓膜温計の信頼性を確立する必要がある。以上の予備実験の結果を得て、若年者に対する測定を開始した。3月末の時点で6名が被験者としての参加に同意し順次測定を行っている。現在、測定が完了しておらず被験者の追加も予定しているが、実施された結果によると、足湯に伴う体温の上昇により、血圧の低下および中心動脈伸展性の上昇が認められている。今後、高齢者も含めた被験者の参加を確保し、測定を進める予定である。
