项目摘要

研究2年目にあたる本年は、19世紀中葉のアメリカにおけるピクチャレスクについて、「パーク（park）」概念に焦点を当てて検討した。主な対象としては、アメリカ最初の郊外住宅地であるニュージャージーのルウェリン・パーク（1853）とアメリカ最初の公園であるニューヨークのセントラル・パーク（1857）を扱った。この研究成果は、「2つの公園―ルウェリン・パーク（1853年）とセントラル・パーク（1857年）」として、日本臨床政治学会（専修大学、2015年10月24日）にて口頭発表（招待講演）を行った。また、前年度の研究成果を踏まえ、トマス・ジェファソンの私邸・大農園である「モンティチェロ」の造園を英国風景式庭園およびピクチャレスク美学との関係から分析した「アメリカのピクチャレスク移植―19世紀前半の農園と霊園を中心に」を、日本18世紀学会第37回大会（東京大学、2015年6月20日）にて口頭発表した。さらに、前年度から引き続き、19世紀前半の英国におけるピクチャレスクについての理解を深めるために、1790年代以降の美学言説の精読を行った。その研究成果の一部として、美学言説と植物学・旅行との関係性からピクチャレスクの社会的受容を考察した論文「ジェームズ・プラムトリが見たピクチャレスク美学―『ザ・レイカーズ』（1798）を読む」を『日本18世紀学会年報』（日本18世紀学会、第30号、2015年6月）で発表した。その他、夏期休暇には、ルウェリン・パークおよびセントラル・パークの実地調査だけでなく、ヨセミテ国立公園とイエローストーン国立公園の実地調査・資料収集も行うことができた。1860～70年代にかけてオルムステッドが深く関与した国立公園構想と環境主義についての論文をまとめることが、今後の課題である。
