项目摘要

本年度は、昨年度実施した〈産業〉概念についての検討を継続しつつ、サン=シモンにおける〈自由〉概念の明確化に着手した。中期～後期（1813-1825年）の著作を精読し、〈自由〉をめぐる議論が「産業体制」の構造そのもの、すなわち産業者が担う世俗権力と学者が担う精神的権力という、権力分離の構図と密接に結びついていることが明らかになった。主著『産業』（1816-18年）によれば、〈自由〉は「生産の労働においてまったく邪魔されないこと、自身で生産したものから利益を得るのを妨げられないこと」と定義される。この〈自由〉は、〈産業〉概念同様、それにもとづく活動が共同体にとって有用性を持つか否かということが争点となっており、サン=シモンは個人的自由の追求を否定する。〈自由〉とは、その所産が社会組織にとって有益である限りにおいて肯定され、〈自由〉そのものを無制限に追求することによって社会の秩序が乱されるのであれば、それは排除あるいは制限される対象となる。〈自由〉をめぐる上記の考えを踏まえた上で、サン=シモンの「産業体制」構想へと立ち返ると、「産業体制」の確立には〈自由〉の実現が暗黙のうちに織りこまれていることが看取できる。彼が提唱する「産業体制」においては、世俗権力を産業者に、精神的権力を学者にそれぞれ委ねることで、暴力による支配は産業的な「管理行政」に、宗教は「科学」に置き換えられる。産業者による管理行政、学者による科学の主導は、彼ら自身の生産的活動を妨げられないこと、束縛なく能力を発展させることを目指す〈自由〉の実現にほかならない。産業者と学者たちが自身の能力を最大限に発揮し、社会に最大の有用性をもたらすことが「産業体制」の構造に与えられた本懐であり、まさに組織された〈産業〉をつうじてサン=シモンのとらえる〈自由〉の実現が果たされることを示した。
