本研究は、宗教実践者（在俗信徒）としての公家・武家勢力に着目し、世俗社会にとっての宗教、宗教にとっての世俗社会の歴史的評価を試みる。最終年度は、補助的な資料調査・分析を行いつつ、論文執筆や報告に努めた。在俗者の受戒について、重受の場合には、古来、賛否両論があったが、この議論は室町期にも影響を残している。滅罪の効能が期待された十重戒には、国王・大臣が職に就いた際に受戒するべきとする『梵網経』の規定がある。そうした主張は、15世紀の仏教界にもみられ、室町殿や天皇の受戒をも意義づけた。そのため、在俗信徒である彼らが受戒する際には、剃髪ではなく、有髪であることに政治的・宗教的意味があった。一方、在俗者の剃髪に対して、仏教界には抵抗感があったが、法体俗人の衣服規定が定められるなど、およそ16世紀をピークとして、その後、ゆるやかに減退する社会現象であると推測される。在俗者の視角から、転換期・移行期とされる近世初頭までのアウトラインを素描することができた。拙稿①「宗教勢力としての中世禅林」では、禅、天台、律、法華、浄土真宗などを視野に入れ、中世後期の宗教勢力の総体に迫った。宗教勢力を社会集団とみる際、彼らが宗派としての結束性だけでなく、地縁・職能などの社会的属性をもって他集団と結びつく分散性に着目。僧侶から居士号や法衣を授与され、道場主も務めたような、俗人の主体性や宗教的地位の向上が、中世仏教の社会定着の基軸になったと展望した。拙稿②「法名・道号・房号」では、鎌倉仏教から戦国武将にいたる、歴史人物の名前の表記法・呼称法が、不統一である点を指摘した。口頭報告では、南北朝期の京都における宗教勢力の情勢に関して報告した。室町期を対象とする本研究の時間軸を広げる意味をもつ。また、中世仏教の僧坊における飲酒・酒宴の特質に関する報告は、仏教堕落論を批判的に検討する本研究にとって、副産物といえる。
