本研究は、16世紀に畿内・瀬戸内海東部を支配した三好氏権力を宗教勢力とのかかわりから分析しようとするものである。まず、本年度はこれまでの研究を総括した著書を刊行した。従来、三好氏は畿内政治史で足利将軍との京都争奪戦の中でのみ論じられるなど矮小化されてきた。それに対して、国人領主の統合、城郭の性格、宗教勢力からみた都市支配、裁判と村落共同体、天皇との関係など畿内の地域社会の特質から、その支配の特色を明らかにした。その結果、三好氏は戦国仏教と連携し、村や町の共同体を支配の基礎に置くなど、それまでの畿内の権力にはない性格を持つことが明らかになった。三好氏は、畿内の守護だけでなく、各地の戦国大名と比較検討できる支配の内実を持ち、室町幕府を克服する支配方式を編み出す点では、織田・豊臣政権の先駆的な「政権」であると評価した。また、法華宗寺院の文書調査から、16世紀中葉に京都の法華宗本山寺院の間で結ばれた「永禄の規約」の再検討を行った。従来は教義上の相論の和解とのみ理解されてきたが、実は京都を取り巻く軍事的緊張に対抗して形成された法華宗教団の臨時的な結合体が、三好氏の保障と調停によって、平時にも存続するために整備した規約であったことを明らかにした。また、肖像画やそこに記された賛の検討から、将軍や諸大名の葬礼を担った禅宗と三好氏の関係を検討した。足利将軍が住持を任命する南禅寺や五山に対抗して、三好氏は天皇により住持が任命され、南禅寺と同格を主張する大徳寺と関係を結んでいった。その背景には、三好氏が大徳寺の下に五山など幕府の官寺を包摂する形で、武家の宗教秩序の再編を志向していたことを明らかにした。
