算数文章題を解決する際に、作動記憶内の情報を更新する機能が重要であることが近年報告されている。しかしながら、算数文章題はいくつかの過程からなる複雑な課題であり、どの過程において更新機能が重要かは明らかではない。申請者は、算数文章題解決の統合段階（各文を関連づけ、問題に一貫した表象を構築）での更新機能の重要性、および、その働きについて検討した。先行研究によって、過剰情報（問題の解決には不要な情報）が含まれている問題では、統合に必要な時間が延びることが知られている。申請者が行った実験では、過剰情報による統合時間への影響は問題解決者のもつ更新機能によって異なることが示された。すなわち、更新機能が低い問題解決者は、過剰情報によって大きく統合時間が延びた。さらに、申請者が行った実験によって更新機能が異なる問題解決者は、含まれている情報が異なる問題表象を構築する可能性が示唆された。その実験では統合後に語彙判断課題を行い、文章題中の情報が問題表象の中にどのように保持されているのかを調べた。その結果、更新機能の低い問題解決者では、統合後においても必要な情報と過剰情報のどちらも同程度の強さで保持しているが、更新機能の高い者は、過剰情報の保持は必要情報に比べて減じていることを示唆する結果が得られ、適切な情報のみを含んだ問題表象を構築することが示唆された(計画1)。特に本年度においては、論文投稿の過程でデータの追加を行い、また、分析方法をこれまでの分散分析から重回帰分析へと変更した。結果として、実験結果を強固に主張できるものとなり、Journal of Educational Psychologyに再投稿を行った（この論文については平成28年4月14日付けでアクセプトされている）。文章題の成績との関連ではなく、統合という特定のプロセスの背後における更新機能の重要性、およびその働きを検討していることが本研究の特色である。
