项目摘要

本年度は、幕末・維新期のノンフィクション著作における仮名遣いの実態を調査し、表記の画一化の一側面を明らかにした。近世・近代の仮名遣いの歴史を取り上げる先行研究は、（ア）復古思想を背景に、または（イ）教育政策に関わっていた国学者の影響によって、（ウ）明治初期に（エ）歴史的仮名遣いが採用された、という推移が記述されている。しかし、この記述には（エ）「歴史的仮名遣い」の定義が行われていない、などの問題点がある。昨年度の研究は明治初期の仮名遣い書や辞書、そして綴字科教科書に示されている表記が「正しい仮名遣い」とみなして、概ね近世の仮名遣い書及び現代の『日本国語大辞典』にみえる歴史的仮名遣いと一致していることを明らかにし、上記（エ）にある問題点を取り上げた。本年度の研究は、1850年頃に刊行された洋学者と漢学者の著作を資料として、復古思想を持たず、国学の世界には所属しない人の仮名遣いの実態について調査した。調査の結果、幕末期に刊行され洋学者または漢学者によって著された資料の仮名遣いが概ね画一的であることが明らかになった。このことより、幕末期の時点で国学との直接的な関わりがなく復古思想を持たない知識層の間にも画一的な仮名遣いに対する意識があったと判断できる。すなわち、上記に挙げた先行研究における記述の中の（ア）及び（イ）に問題があるといえるのである。明治時代には歴史的仮名遣いの採用に関わる明文化された政策がなかったことを考えると、歴史的仮名遣いの使用が国学者あるいは復古思想の人の働きかけによるというより、幕末期の時点で知識層における画一的な仮名遣い規範意識によるものだったと考える方が自然であろう。この結果について5月日本近代語研究会の発表大会にて口頭発表を行う予定である。
