本研究の目的は「効果のある学校」が成立する要因とそのプロセスを，日米の「効果のある学 校」の比較研究を通して明らかにすることである。社会的格差が拡大する近年において顕在化した、子どもたちの「学力格差問題」に対する関心から「効果のある学校」研究に注目が集まっている。「効果のある学校」とは，貧困家庭などの、社会階層的に不利な立場に置かれる子どもたちの学力保障を実現していることが量的調査によって示された学校を指す(鍋島2003) 。先行の研究では、その特徴については明らかにされてきたが、効果成立のプロセスが明らかにされていないことや国際的な比較研究が行われていないことが指摘されている。そこで「効果のある学校」はどのような要因・プロセスを経て，成立するのか。その成立プロセスには日・米によってどのような相違点・共通点が見られるのかという二つの検討課題を参与観察などの質的な手法を用いて解決してきた。これまで、貧困地域に所在する日米二つの小学校での参与観察調査、学校の教職員や保護者を対象としたインタビューなどを行い、日本では20名以上、アメリカでは60名以上のインタビューを完了した。平成29年度は、そうしたインタビューデータを整理し、研究成果をまとめる期間として活用した。その結果、当該年度の助成期間中の業績として、査読論文3本などの成果を上げることができた。本研究はマイノリティの教育保障をいかに実現していくべきか、新たな学問的示唆、政策的示唆を提供した点で意義深い。
