项目摘要

2017年4月に多文化医療研究会にて、インドの不可触民解放運動と水洗トイレ普及運動の歴史に関する口頭発表を行い、歴史的な側面から「清潔」「サニテーション」という価値言説と実践がいかにインドに影響を与えたのかを分析するための知見を得た。2017年11月末に博士論文「現代インドにおける清掃人カースト差別と公衆衛生―ラージャスターン州における屎尿処理技術革新を通じた社会変革の試みに着目して―」を提出した。2017年12月には、リーディングプログラム（GSS）の一環で、インド・ナーグプル市にある国立環境科学技術研究機構において、インドの地域社会におけるオンサイト下水処理技術の開発と普及に関する研修を行い、同技術が調査地であるラージャスターン州の環境汚染を改善するための実践的なソリューションとなるか否かについての議論を行った。2018年1月には、ラージャスターン州都にある州立公文書館において、調査地である同州東部周辺における清掃人カーストの運動の様態について、独立前後期の英語・ヒンディー語の史料収集を行った。また、同地域においてインド国内NGOが運営する職業訓練施設周辺にて、ダリト差別と公衆衛生に関する短期フィールド調査を行った。調査内容は、過去数十年にわたる屎尿処理方法の変化に関して、清掃人カーストおよび農家にインタビューをすること、また、清掃人カースト・コミュニティーの慣習についての聞き取り調査であった。さらに、調査地にあるアラブ・ペルシア研究所にて、19世紀～20世紀前半にかけてイスラーム藩王国であった同地域の行政についての英語・ヒンディー語・ウルドゥー語の史料収集を行った。ウルドゥー語の史料収集と今後の研究活動について、同研究所の所長一同をはじめ、研究者の人びととの交流を通じ有益な知見を得た。
