花の色は送粉者に導かれて多様化してきたとされている。本研究の目的は送粉者の訪花行動を観察し、花形質のドライバーとしての送粉者の機能を評価するため、花の色は送粉者によって決定づけられるか、花の色と形態の相関進化は起きているかを検討する。花の形質は送粉者の影響だけでなく、植物の系統からも影響されるため、調査は立山の高山帯と、立山の高山帯と似た送粉者相を持つアビスコ自然公園の高山帯との2か所で行った。動物媒植物全種を対象に、その植物種に訪花する送粉者の訪花行動を観察した。その後、訪花を観察した送粉者や花を採取してラボに持ち帰り、送粉者では口吻の長さ、頭幅を、花では花冠の幅、花筒の長さ、花筒の入り口の幅をノギスで測定した。花の色は分光器で測定した。その反射スペクトルを元に、膜翅目および双翅目の色覚モデルで色を評価した。解析は、1.花の色に地域によって差があるのか。2. 花の色と花筒の長さ間に相関関係があるのか。これら2点を植物の系統関係を考慮したPhylogeneticGLMで解析した。結果は、1.双翅目および膜翅目の色覚モデルの両方で花の色の生起頻度に地域間の違いは見られなかった。我々が過去に行った、送粉者がほぼ双翅目のニュージーランドと比較すると、膜翅目の色覚モデル上では立山でもアビスコでも統計的な違いが検出された。このことは双翅目だけが生育する群集と比べて膜翅目と双翅目が生育する群集では花の色が多様化していることを意味している。2.花の色と形態の間の相関関係では、立山でもアビスコでも、花筒が長いグループは、花筒が短いグループと比べて膜翅目の色度図上で青系の色に知覚される花色が多いことが分かった。このことは花の色と形態の相関進化が起きていることを意味するだろう。これらの結果は色以外にも送粉者によって決定づけられる形質が一般的に存在する事を示した画期的な成果であるといえる。
