项目摘要

本年度は大きく分けて二つの事柄に関して研究してきた。一つは1952年に起きた戦犯釈放運動が、どのようなメディア環境下で行われていたのかということを検討してみた。これは当時の新聞（全国紙と全ての県紙）の社説・論説、掲載紹介された投書を分析することによって、当時の報道の様相と、世論の動向を考察した。また当時よく読まれていた雑誌の上位15誌が戦犯釈放問題と釈放運動をどのように評価し報道していたのかも分析した。分析の結果、新聞の大多数が戦犯釈放運動を支持していたことが分かった。ただし当時の新聞は少なくとも BC 級戦犯を犠牲者とし、この釈放推進を概ね支持していたが、一方で A 級戦犯については依然批判的に見ていた新聞社も多かったし、紙面に掲載された投書でも戦争指導者（A級戦犯）の責任を別個のものとして論じるものがいた。雑誌については戦犯に対して同情的な記事が多数であったことが確認された。もう一つは戦犯が靖国神社に合祀された過程について研究してきた。戦犯釈放運動の中心的機関であった復員官署法務調査部門が、実は靖国神社に戦犯を合祀しようとしていた組織でもあったことが分かった。法務調査部門は 1952 年 4 月の講和条約発効直前から戦犯の合祀を企図し始め、靖国の事実上の分社・護国神社への先行合祀など、靖国合祀のための布石を打っていた。戦争受刑者世話会も法務調査部門と共に合祀を目指し、1954 年に靖国側から将来合祀する旨を引き出した。そして 1958 年より法務調査部門は靖国神社との戦犯合祀の折衝に実際に臨んだ。しかし筑波藤麿靖国神社宮司は A 級戦犯の合祀に関しては慎重姿勢であった。そのため A 級戦犯は合祀対象から脱落したが、靖国は法務調査部門の要請を受け入れ、1959 年に法務調査部門が調製した祭神名票に基づき、大部分の BC 級戦犯を靖国に合祀した。
