项目摘要

本研究の目的は、ゾラを純粋な写実主義の継承者とする文学史の見方を相対化することにある。その際重要になるゾラの美術批評の分析は前年度に行った。本年は美術批評をもとにゾラ像全体を再構成し、得られた作家像の歴史的意義を考察した。上記作業を行うにはまず、初期美術批評に見られる「生」の思想に着目する必要がある。これは、作品世界は作者の生の表現であり、芸術家は描く対象に生命を吹き込まなければならないとする理論である。人間の生命の根源から来る創造能力を価値化するこの美学が、写実派の客観主義に対立する核となっているのである。この思想を起点に、ゾラの作品の全体を見渡した。その結果、以下のことが明らかになった。①生の思想は『パリの胃袋』をはじめ、無生物に生命を与える擬人法などに発展し、作品の芸術性の根幹を成す②この美学は後年、『作品』などの小説を通じて科学思想と統合される③そして晩年の作品群でゾラは、生を軸にキリスト教に代わる倫理観を提示する至り、自然主義固有の真善美の体系を築く。歴史的な意義については、生命の創造性を追求する美学は、写実主義を相対化するフローベールらにも見られず、ゾラが切り開いた独自の領域であると言える。しかし同時にゾラの思想はライシテに向かう19世紀後半の時代状況にも由来する。宗教の共同幻想が瓦解する中で、むき出しの個人を価値付ける思想が待望されていた。例えば美学では、ニーチェやベルクソンに影響を与えたギュイヨーが、芸術とは人間の生全体の表現であるとし、ゾラの拘った「欲望」を肯定する「生の美学」を提唱した。本研究の意義は、作家研究として、美術批評を起点に新たなゾラの全体像を示すとともに、文学史研究として自然主義を、写実主義を乗り越える固有の文学体系として規定した点にある。さらにその重要性は、19世紀後半の状況の中にゾラを位置付けたことで、思想史的な広がりをも持つだろう。
