本研究では、2011年東北沖地震の発生前後において、震源域を含む日本海溝域の地震活動変化について調査を進めてきた。微小地震を含む地震活動変化を議論するには、陸上観測記録に加え、震源直上で地震を捉えた海底観測記録も必要となる。昨年度までに開発したプレート境界周辺の自動地震検出・震源決定手法を、海陸統合地震観測データに適用し、東北沖地震の発生前（2007～2008年）と発生後（直後～3ヶ月間）の地震活動解析をおこなった。その結果、地震の検出下限マグニチュードが地震前～2、地震後～3の地震カタログを新たに得た。既存カタログの下限に比べ、両期間とも約1改善されている。超巨大地震直後の高雑音時でも高検出能を実現した点は、本研究の成果の一つである。次に、震源域北限にあたる北緯39度付近に着目した。この領域では過去の地震・構造調査により、プレート境界面に存在する流体層と、それが原因とみられる非地震活動域が確認されている。本研究結果では、地震後に当該領域においても地震活動が確認された。この時間変化は、震源域北限周辺における応力状態や物性が、地震発生により変化（流体の移動など）したことを示唆する。さらに本研究の地震カタログから、規模（マグニチュード）別頻度の時空間変化にも着目した。規模別頻度分布（FMD）は従来ベキ乗則で表され、大地震と小地震の発生数比である指数b値によって特徴づけられてきた。本研究での調査により、東北沖地震前後でのFMDの時間変化および東北沖地震後におけるFMDの空間変化が捉えられた。特に東北沖地震後、領域によっては従来の一つのb値では説明できないFMDが確認された。地震活動変化から導き出されたこうしたFMDの時空間変化は、余効変動やプレート境界の物性変化から制約されてきた巨大地震震源域を新たに規定する観測事実といえる。
