本研究「毘沙門天像の成立と展開―唐・宋・元から平安・鎌倉へ―」は、東アジアの仏教において大変重要視された毘沙門天が、７から１４世紀においてどのように信仰され、また関連する美術作品を生み出してきたかという問題について考察するものである。第三年次は昨年度に引き続き慶派による造像に注目し、鎌倉時代に制作された伝快慶作・毘沙門天像（京都・青蓮院所蔵、以下青蓮院像）を中心に調査研究を行った。２９年１０月に東京文化財研究所で研究発表を行い、青蓮院に伝来した二体の毘沙門天立像について論じた。ここでいう二体の毘沙門天像とは、現在青蓮院に安置されている青蓮院像、そして個人蔵を経て京都・泉屋博古館に収蔵された博古館像を指す。青蓮院では、１３世紀の初めころ、建永元年（１２０６）に熾盛光堂、そして承元二年（１２０８）に大懺法院、という二つのお堂が造営され、そこにそれぞれ毘沙門天像が祀られたと考えられる。青蓮院像、博古館像がそれぞれどちらのお堂に安置されたのか、という問題が近年議論の焦点となっている。上記の問題は、鎌倉時代の神将形彫刻の造形上の展開を考える上で、また同時代の毘沙門天信仰と造像を辿る上で非常に重要である。発表ではこの問題点等を念頭に置きながら、造形上の特質に関して同時代の神将形像と比較を行った。加えて、青蓮院吉水蔵聖教中の青蓮院毘沙門天像に関する新史料を紹介した。当時青蓮院での供養を担当した慈円（１１５５～１２２５）の毘沙門天信仰と造像についても確認し、二体の毘沙門天像の制作背景について考察した。
