近年のゆとり教育や社会変化の要因に加えて、大学入学者選抜方法において推薦入試の割合が増加する傾向にある中で、大学入学者の学力は多様化してきている。一方、昨今のグローバル化した社会において、大学卒業者の活躍の場は既に世界の国々の人達と協同し、かつ競争を余儀なくされている現実がある。兼ねてより、文科省の諮問機関である中央教育審議会において、我が国のこの様な状況に対処する為に、順次性のある世界標準のカリキュラムを策定し、卒業生の質を保証する評価法を取り入れた新しい教育システムを再構築する指針が打ち出されている。日本数学会の下部組織である「工学系数学基礎教育研究会」ではH25年度より科研費プロジェクト「新しい工学系数学基礎教育のためのCalculus教科書作成」において、国際標準に準拠した論理的思考力と応用力養成を重視した教科書作成を進めてきた。しかし、推薦入学者が増加する傾向の中で、大学入学時点において数学基礎力がこの標準コースを受講する基準に満たない学生が一定の割合で存在する。この様な学生層、及び広く工学以外の専攻や文系の学生をも対象に、大学数学の立場から数学の基礎的な知識と論理的思考力・応用力を養成する為に、本科研費プロジェクト「新しい数学基礎教育のための Precalculus 教科書作成」において本格的なPrecalculusコースの教科書作成を進めてきた。唯、当初予定した研究期間３年間の間に教科書を完成させることが出来ず、１年間の延長を願い出て学振に受理されたものの受け入れ機関が見つからずに、廃止申請を余儀なくされるに至ったことは残念である。ただし、教科書は予定通りこの１年間で完成させる予定である。
