前年度の成果を引き受けつつ、1930年代後半を主な研究対象とした。まずは、坂口安吾が初めて完成させた長編小説である『吹雪物語』（1938年7月、竹村書房）と、その原案である未完の「母を殺した少年」（『作品』第７巻第９号、1936年9月）について、当時日本の文壇に見られた故郷観や、転向者による帰農の物語と比較するとともに、同時期に流行していたジイドやドストエフスキーなど外国作家の影響、太宰治の小説の文体などとも比較検討することで、当時の日本文学との関係について考察した。そのさい、作品の舞台であるとともに安吾の故郷でもある新潟にて地理的な関係などの調査を行った。次に、安吾が『吹雪物語』の後に「説話もの」「歴史もの」という、〈現在〉のように変化しつつある過程を扱うのではなく、〈過去〉という完結した時を題材にして書きはじめている要因について、戦争や日本回帰の流れも考慮に入れつつ、当時の安吾のジャンル意識を検討することから明らかにした。そのさい、「説話もの」にはファルス的要素がしばしば見られることや、発表雑誌である『文体』が文芸誌ではなかったことなどに着目した。また、「歴史もの」の第一作目である「イノチガケ」（『文学界』第7巻第７号、9号、1940年7月、9月）について、この作品で初めて神という無限、完全、絶対の存在が顕在的なテーマとして選ばれた意味を、戦時色が濃くなっていた時期に書かれていることから検討するとともに、初期から一貫する安吾自身の「決定的な不可能生へのあらがい」というテーマとの関連から捉えた。その結果、「イノチガケ」が後の「真珠」（『文芸』第10巻第6号、1942年6月）へとつながるものであることが浮かび上がってきた。
