本居宣長は国学の大成者と言われているが、今日、その学問は様々な分野から研究されているため細分化が進み、全体像がかえって分かりにくくなっている。そこで、本研究においては、本居派国学社中、特に彦根の長野義言を主とした国学社中の活動実態を明らかにすることにより、当時の人々が宣長をどう読んでいたかを究明することを目指した。平成29年度の研究実績は以下の通りである。長野義言自筆書簡「長野義言尺牘」の翻字を継続して行い、全十軸すべての翻字を終えた。その作業を通して、「尺牘」は本来の書簡の姿を留めていない場合があることを発見し、また、書簡の内容についても分析が進んだ。これについては、口頭発表を行い、論文化して雑誌に発表した。義言著『詞の玉緒末分櫛』については、堀内家旧蔵資料に基づいて調査を行い、義言の自筆稿本が存在すること、板本の校正を幾度も行っていたことなどを確認した。これら自筆稿本と板本を比較し、さらに、「尺牘」に記された出版に関する情報と合わせて、『末分櫛』の出版過程を検討した。これについても一定の成果を得たので口頭発表を行ったが、その後、各地に残る『末分櫛』板本をさらに調査したところ、出版時期の異なる板本が何本か存在することが新たに判明した。これについては現在も調査を継続し、分析を進めている。それと同時に、出版事情を通して見えてきた、義言と、パトロンであった堀内広城との関係についても、調査・分析を続けている。
