项目摘要

今年度は、アメリカに渡航し、一年間ハワイ大学のEALL研究所に訪問学者として滞在した。この間に、アメリカにおける研究動向の把握に努めながら、研究課題に関する資料の収集と博士論文の執筆を行った。今年度は主に自由をめぐる北村透谷の同時代的言説を重点的に考察した。自由の問題と関わった諸知識人（福沢諭吉、中村正直、中江兆民、山路愛山、徳富蘇峰ら）と比較することによって、透谷の彼らへの批判や批評、また自由観における彼らと透谷との違いを分析した。その際、自由民権運動に関する史料、明治二十年代の論争（人生相渉論争）や自由の問題と深く関わる民衆史料を重要な参照点とした。分析した結果の一部分を、2018年2月2日にThe Concept of ‘kokumin’in Meiji Literature：A consideration of the Writings of Kitamura Tokokuという題目で、ハワイ大学が主催するEALL TALK SERIES：Grad Student Colloquium Japanese Literature, Translated and Colonial Modernityで公表した。そこで、明治初期の日本文学の中で国民が如何に描かれているかを検討し、複数の国民像の中で、透谷の言説がいかなる特徴を持っているかを言明した上で、国民像と彼の自由観との関係を明らかにした。また、次年度に上海大学で開催するAssociation for Cultural Studies国際学会で、“Translating and Retelling Tradition：Reimagining between Eras in Japanese Culture”というパネルを組み、Translating and Transforming the concept of‘Liberty’in Meiji Period という題目で発表することに決まった。そこで、透谷の言説だけを議論の対象にせず、明治初期から二十年代までの時代的文脈を系列的に考察し、翻訳語としての自由が成り立った社会的・思想的文脈を明らかにするつもりである。
