项目摘要

特別研究員2年目にあたる本年度は、「ロックにおける生得説批判の検討」という昨年度残された課題、そして「証言に基づく信念はいかにして正当化されるのか」という本研究達成のための新しい課題に向き合った。前者については、ロックの『人間知性論』（以下『知性論』）第1巻及び『知性論』以前の著作（具体的には『自然法論』や『知性論草稿』）におけるロックの生得説批判の内実及び変遷、ケンブリッジ・プラトニストとの相違について研究し、ロックの立場は『知性論』出版以前も『知性論』第1巻においても一貫していたことがわかった。また、ケンブリッジ・プラトニストとの相違については、モアとカドワースの著作に当たることで、両者との差異を明らかにした。これまで、多くの研究者はロックとケンブリッジ・プラトニストとの共通性に注目してきたが、両者の差異を明らかにした研究はこれまで世界的にほとんどなかったため、本研究には一定の意義があった。こうした研究成果は『論集』にて明らかにした。後者について、まずはウェルボーンらが行った、ロックは証言を知識の源泉として考えていない、認識論的な個人主義者であるという批判が妥当でないことを示した。彼らの批判は17世紀当時の「知識」の用法とロックのそれを混同したものだからである。その上で、ロックの議論に合理的再構成を行うことで、彼が証言によって得られた信念の正当化基準について言及していることを明らかにしようとした。この点について、国際学会にて現時点での研究成果を発表し、一定の評価を受けた。本研究は、我々の知識のほとんどが証言に基づいているにも拘わらず、世界的にもあまり研究されてこなかった証言の認識論に寄与すると同時に、ロック研究においてもほとんど言及されてこなかったロックの蓋然性論研究の不足を補うものである。
