本研究の課題は，高等学校部活動の拡大メカニズムを明らかにすることである。近年は部活動中での体罰を原因とした生徒の自殺や，部活動顧問を担当することによる教員の多忙化などにより，部活動への社会的な関心が高まっている。それに伴い，なぜそれほどまでに部活動が拡大したのかを検討する研究が提出されてきている。しかし，部活動に関する先行研究には，2つの課題を指摘することができる。部活動の拡大を①全国的な平均値でのみ議論しており学校レベルの実態から分析されていないこと，②対象が運動部に偏っており文化系部活動も含めた総合的な視点が欠けていたこと，である。2017年度は主に②の課題を念頭に置き，既存統計の再整理を行い，1960年代まで文化系部活動の規模が大きかったが，やがて縮小していったこと，そして逆に運動部活動が拡大していったことを明らかにした。2018年度は主に①の課題に取り組み，学校レベルの部活動の実態の変化を分析した。愛媛県を中心として，各高校が過去に発行した学校要覧を分析し，いかに文化系部活動が縮小し，また運動部が拡大したのかを検討した。その結果，1970年代の学習指導要領の改訂が部活動の変化に大きな影響を及ぼしていることが示唆された。さらに，当時の教職員向け雑誌記事を収集し，学習指導要領改訂の影響を裏付ける証拠を得た。加えて2018年度中は，最近の高校生の生活の中での部活動の影響力の増大についての分析を行った。2000年代以降，学力試験ではなく部活動の実績などを通じて大学へ進学することのできる推薦入試，AO入試が拡大した。その結果，それら入試形態の拡大が，高校生活の中での部活動の比重の高まりを促していることが示唆された。分析の結果明らかになった過去の部活動の実態は，近年の部活動論では顧みられてこなかった。この過去の実態は，現在とは違った形の部活動のあり方の可能性を示している。
