This project examines the cinematic works and theoretical writings of a seminal Japanese screenwriter and film director Shindo Kaneto (1912-2012). Shindo's work serves as a gateway for addressing such recurring themes in the postwar Japanese cinema as war trauma, social discrimination and relationship between sexuality and politics. The main objectives of the project are 1) to provide the first comprehensive study of Shindo's screen works; 2) to situate Shindo's work within the context of several trends in world cinema; 3) to forge a new way to look at film authorship and agency through examining Shindo's multiple roles; 4) to place Shindo's theoretical work on screenwriting in the global context; 5) to evaluate the role of film festivals in the international reception of Shindo's films.

本项目考察了具有开创性的日本编剧和电影导演金户新道（1912-2012）的电影作品和理论著作。新藤的作品为战后日本电影中反复出现的战争创伤、社会歧视以及性与政治之间的关系等主题提供了一扇大门。该项目的主要目标是：1)首次全面研究新藤的屏风作品；2)将新藤的作品置于世界电影的几个趋势的背景下；3)通过审视新藤的多重角色，形成一种看待电影原创和代理的新方式；4)将新藤的编剧理论工作置于全球语境中；5)评价电影节对新藤电影国际接受的作用。
