项目摘要

研究最終年度の今年度は、継続発展的に古市古墳群、百舌鳥古墳群、佐紀古墳群、馬見古墳群をはじめ、畿内大型古墳群出土埴輪の調査を実施するとともに、過去２年次の成果を総括し、古代国家形成にいたる古墳時代の王権構造や埴輪祭祀を通じた王権伸長戦略について考究した。とりわけ、これまで斉一的に変化すると捉えられてきた畿内大型古墳群の埴輪生産が、やや不均質さをもって展開すること、そしてそういったあり方が古墳群内部での有力者の求心構造や物資調達方式の違いに結び付く可能性があることを指摘し、古墳時代の王権構造の復元に寄与したことは成果と言える。また、古墳時代を通時期的に検討し、埴輪と政治権力の関係性が一定、あるいは発展的に強化されていくという図式ではなく、両者の関係性は時期によって変転していると述べた点は、墳墓外表で執り行われる祭祀、あるいは墳丘自体が権力生成の場としていかなる役割を果たしていたのかという問いとも深くかかわる重要な問題である。この問題については向後、ほかの墳墓施設や副葬品の動向ともあわせて論じていく必要性があるが、埴輪研究から墳墓祭祀と政治権力の関係性を提示したことで議論の活発化が期待できる。なお、上記の成果は査読誌および各種機関紙において公表した。以上、今年度の研究は、悉皆的な資料調査に基づいて、内実が不明瞭であった畿内大型古墳群の埴輪生産の実態を明らかにしたこと、さらにそこから王権構造の復元に迫って古墳時代像を提示したことにおいて、当初の目的を達成できたといえる。
