本年度は奈良時代の仏像における外国美術の受容のありようを、インド美術との関係性に着目して研究を進めた。中国初唐美術の日本への影響が顕在化するのは７世紀後半からであるが、同時代の中国山東省の神通寺石窟や、山東省博物館に所蔵されるインド美術の影響の認められる仏像作例の現地調査を行った。また、本年度の主要課題として大安寺伝馬頭観音像の考察に着手し、日本の奈良時代におけるインド美術の影響の認められる作例として、本像の位置付けを試みた。本像は胸飾りや足首に蛇を纏わせ、花冠を被るという、馬頭観音としては異例の姿である。その図像は先行研究により、インド・西域・チベットでは流布したものの、中国においては定型図像成立の過程で消えていったものであることが指摘される。このような図像が奈良時代の大安寺で採用された背景に、古代日本に渡来したインド人菩提僊那の影響を改めて想定した。菩提僊那が馬頭観音信仰を有していたことはすでに指摘される。これらのことから、インド僧菩提僊那がインドの馬頭観音の情報を直接日本に伝え、それが菩提僊那の活動した大安寺において重視され、その結果大安寺の伝馬頭観音像の特異な造形が生み出されたと考えた。また、大安寺は唐招提寺と並んで、日本の針葉樹木彫像制作の最初の制作の場の一つである。すなわち大安寺は、インド美術の受容の場であるとともに木彫文化の中国からの受容の窓口の一つとも考えられる。この二つの文化受容の関係性を、大安寺伝馬頭観音像が木彫で造られたことを手がかりに今後さらに検討していきたい。奈良時代は菩提僊那というインド僧の渡来がありながら、これまでその影響はあまり積極的に考えられてこなかった。また、中国からの文化の受け入れの窓口としての大安寺の国際性について、具体的な作例に即して解明することは、これまで十分なされておらず、再検討の余地が十分あると考えられる。
