今年度は、コナラ属を含むブナ科の樹種組成が大きく異なる地域に生息するムササビの餌の選択性の評価を重点的に行った。これまで継続して食性の調査を行ってきた４つの調査地において毎木調査を実施し、利用可能な餌量を推定してムササビの樹木の葉の選択性を評価した。これらの食性調査の結果と、昨年度までに行った日本本土産ブナ科全種の葉の化学成分分析の結果を合わせて、樹種による葉の成分の違いがムササビの餌選択や採餌行動の地域性に及ぼす影響について検討した。その結果として、ムササビはどの地域でもブナ科の樹木の葉を好んで利用しており、特に、糖濃度の高い樹種の葉を選択して採食していることが分かった。糖が多いほど栄養価が高いため、こうした選択性は効率的な採食行動である。しかし、季節によって落葉樹が利用できなくなり樹種選択の幅が狭まると、葉の化学成分による餌の選択性が不明瞭になった。温帯では落葉樹の利用が春から夏に制限されるため、利用できる餌資源が季節的に大きく変化する。ムササビはそうした季節変化を長年にわたって経験し、学習によって効率的な採食行動を獲得していると考えられる。また、ムササビは、葉を食べるときに数回折りたたんで葉の中央部に穴を空けて食べる習性があることが知られているが、この習性には地域性が認められた。樹種としては、クヌギとコナラに対してこういった食べ方がよく見られた。この２種は、葉の糖濃度が高い樹種であるが、糖濃度の高い樹種は植物の防御物質であるフェノール類も多く含まれる傾向がある。糖とフェノール類が特に多いクヌギのような葉では、周縁部にそれがより多く蓄積している。その場合、葉の中央部のみを食べる採食行動は、有毒物質の摂取を軽減するという点で効率的である。夏にクヌギまたはコナラを利用できる地域では、こういった複雑な行動が獲得されやすく、逆に、そうでない地域では獲得されにくいと考えられた。
